Steve Fox is the Vice President of Provider Network Management in the Health Care Services Division of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA). He is responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of all provider relations, education, communication, and eHealth initiatives within the division.
In this role, Steve builds relationships between BCBSMA and its network of more than 30,000 physicians, 73 hospitals, and with the area’s physician groups and professional societies. He is charged with developing the infrastructure and management of BCBSMA provider contracts, innovative contracting designs, and with promoting technology adoption and technological innovation at the clinical point of care.
Steve is an industry expert on eHealth and ePrescribing and speaks nationally on these subjects. He was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to a special commission on health care policy and regulation and a task force charged with implementing electronic health record adoption. Steve recently sat on an expert panel that advised the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) under the US Department of Health and Human Services on the Economic Sustainability for Health Information Exchange (HIE).
Steve headed the creation of an enterprise-wide eHealth strategy to drive the adoption of health care technologies that will improve data gathering, information sharing, and decision-making. Through Steve’s leadership, BCBSMA was instrumental in founding the Massachusetts eRx Collaborative, a statewide multi-payer and vendor effort to drive adoption of electronic prescribing to reduce medication errors and increase efficiency. The Collaborative’s efforts have led to Massachusetts’ position as the leading user of e-prescribing nationwide in 2006, 2007 and 2008, as recognized by its receipt of the Safe-Rx Award. BCBSMA has also received the prestigious 2006 Innovation in Health information Technology Award by the Foundation of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) for its eHealth programs. Steve has also been responsible for leading BCBSMA’s efforts to join with Google as the first health insurer in the nation to participate in the Google HealthTM Personal Health Record for BCBSMA plan members.
Steve is an elected board member of the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC) and the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium (MHDC). Steve also sits on the Board of the Boston based Children’s Investment Fund.
