In Debt We Trust: The Subprime Lending Crisis, the Consumer-Led Recession, & the Imperative of "Responsible Debt Relief"

Dr. Manning will examine the changes in consumer attitudes toward credit and debt that have contributed to the unprecedented levels of household debt. He will discuss some features of U.S. retail banking deregulation that have contributed to changing lender underwriting standards and to the ongoing consumer-led recession of 2008. In particular, the role of the double financial bubble that obscured the fundamental financial problems that precipitated the current housing market and subprime lending crises. He'll explain the different phases of the consumer-led recession, the rise of higher income near bankrupt households, and the potential policy paralysis that could lead to a period of stagflation in 2009-10. He will conclude with an explanation of his patent-pending consumer debt capacity assessment algorithm, his Responsible Debt Relief network for alleviating the household debt crisis, and the importance of partial payment programs in the context of the 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Act and the 2008 recession.

Preemptive Collections: Managing Account Risk Before Delinquency

In today's stressed consumer credit environment, lenders are experiencing higher levels of delinquency and, in some markets, large increases in "walk-aways." This trend makes it increasingly critical that companies take a more proactive approach to identify, contact and manage current customers that are "at-risk" for default or a prolonged period of non-payment. Lenders who leverage data, analytics and technology to handle these high-risk accounts pre-emptively by revising their treatments in the right way are reaping significant bottom-line impact and improving customer loyalty. This session will discuss the elements required to drive these proactive efforts successfully and help lenders begin addressing outstanding assets while there are still more options available.

Lessons Learned from Mortgage & Consumer Loan Servicing & Collections

The concurrence of a broad housing market decline, all time high consumer debt levels and inflationary pressures on daily living expenses has resulted in a major consumer liquidity and debt crisis. This panel will discuss:

  • New treatment programs
  • How the makeup of the debtor has changed
