The record delinquency rates we are seeing in this country are begetting record default levels. Credit card charge-off rates now above 10-percent and mortgage delinquency rates above 9-percent are simply scary. And projections indicate that both will continue to climb. Add newly passed Congressional legislation that competes with the Fed’s new credit card rules and we have the financial-services equivalent to Mt. St. Helens just prior to eruption. At stake is no less than the regulatory and economic environment in which financial services companies and collection agencies will operate in the future, including how they price, how they manage for risk and how they market.
2009 is not the year to stay home.
