Joan L. Gulley
Executive Vice President
PNC Financial Services

Joan L. Gulley is chief marketing officer for PNC Financial Services Corporation with responsibility for brand management, advertising, market research, competitive intelligence and knowledge management. She is also responsible for product and segment management across the Retail Bank including deposit and consumer loan product management, fee-based services, credit and debit card products, and rewards and loyalty programs. PNC’s full-service brokerage firm, J.J.B. Hilliard Lyons Inc. also reports to her.

Prior to being named to her current position in July 2005, Gulley was chief executive officer of PNC Advisors, the personal wealth management and institutional investment services arm of PNC.

Before joining PNC Advisors, Gulley was head of Business Banking. Previously, Gulley was deputy manager of the Regional Community Bank responsible for consumer product management, segment management, marketing research and knowledge-based marketing. Gulley has also served as director of Strategic Planning for the PNC Financial Service Group.

In 1986, Gulley joined The Massachusetts Company, a newly charted bank and a subsidiary of The Travelers Group. As chief administrative officer, she led the creation of a unique, nationwide banking franchise that specialized in credit card and jumbo mortgage capabilities. From a single office in Boston, The Massachusetts Company grew to $1.7 billion in assets with customers nationwide, and became one of the nation’s 300 largest banks within a few years and a recognized model for branchless nationwide banking.

In 1993, PNC acquired The Massachusetts Company and Gulley was named Chairman and Chief Executive officer. She then led the creation of a significant private bank franchise with offices in Boston and Greenwich, Connecticut.

Before joining The Massachusetts Company, Gulley was senior vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston with responsibility for payments and securities services to New England financial institutions. She was also national product manager for Federal Reserve Systemcheck services and had management responsibility for the InterDistrict Transportation System operated by the Federal Reserve. During her 16-year career with the Federal Reserve, she held a variety of staff and management positions at both the Board of Governors in Washington and the Boston Reserve Bank.

She serves as a director of J.J.B. Hilliard, Lyons Inc. and PNC Community Partners, the community development arm of PNC Bank.

She is also a Trustee of the Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Chatham College. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards over the past 20 years.

Gulley holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Rochester where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and attended the Advanced Management Program sponsored by Harvard Business School.
