Ignorance is Bliss?? The Importance of Financial Literacy

The issue of consumer financial literacy has received a flurry of recent attention in the financial services arena. One concern is that consumers do not have the tools to understand and navigate the complexities of the current financial marketplace. This session will address several important questions about financial literacy among Millennial consumers:
  • How 'smart' are Millennial consumers about financial matters, such as investment and credit principles?
  • How does financial knowledge affect behaviors, such as saving, credit card spending, and the use of other financial services?
  • How do these consumers make financial decisions?

An Identity-Centric View: Non-Traditional Ways to Look at Credit

As new customer acquisition gets more competitive, expanding the customer base and increasing revenues require discovering customers that traditional credit risk evaluation tools would turn away. When consumers' lack of credit makes them "thin file" prospects, there is little on which to base a decision. To accurately assess a thin file individual, financial institutions must look not just at the person's credit risk, but at his or her identity risk. Identity risk needs to be an important consideration in granting credit, especially when there is little credit history to examine. This session will help credit grantors gain insight into what it means to have an integrated view of the potential risk of an individual, incorporating identity information, traditional credit data, and alternative credit data. As a result, attendees will learn ways to identify new, valuable customers while lowering acquisition costs.
