CT21 Contactless Transactions: An Acquirer/Merchant Perspective
Contactless cards may be the best way for banks and merchants to persuade consumers to use cards instead of cash at the point of sale for transactions under $5. Cards speed up the checkout process, and encourage consumers spend more-two major benefits to merchants who adopt the technology. But much of the heavy burden of infrastructure costs, employee training, consumer education, and market acceptance also falls on the merchant. This session will survey the nascent experience of contactless transactions from a range of merchants. You'll get a number success stories and learn the potential pitfalls.

Workshop Advisor: Henry Dreifus, CEO,Dreifus Associates, Ltd.
Henry Dreifus is one of the founders of the US advanced card industry. With over 15 years experience in the card technology market, Henry helped develop the ANSI and ISO standards for IC cards, is a founder of the Smart Card Industry Association, and currently heads the leading smart card consulting and integration firm.

Attendees Will Learn:
  • About market opportunities for acquirers and merchants in the contactless revolution

CT23 NFC: Strategies for the Contactless/Telecom Convergence
Near Field Communications (NFC), a technology designed to link electronic devices, can turn a mobile phone into a contactless payment platform. The technology works just as fast as a contactless payment card, with the added advantages of additional data transfer, and mobile connectivity. Pilot projects around the world are enabling mobile handsets to carry out diverse transactions such as ticketing, transportation payments, vending machine purchases, and downloading music directly from a point-of-sale display. This session will bring you up to date on the ongoing worldwide convergence of telecom and transaction technologies.

Workshop Advisor: Jeff Staples, Publishers, Avisian Publishing
Jeff Staples produces identification technology journals including CR80News, RFIDNews, SecureIDNews and ContactlessNews. He was a co-founder of Florida State University's heralded smart card program and its pioneering Card Application Technology Center. He started an early wireless ID technology company; and, with partner Chris Corum, published a pioneering alternative payment journal.

Attendees Will Learn:
  • About the ways in which NFC can be incorporated into a cellular handset, and take advantage of the connectivity of the handset
  • About evolving NFC standards that will soon be finalized
  • About coming handsets that incorporate NFC and services that might be enabled by this new technology
  • About pilot programs that are using NFC today-how they're being received by consumers and merchants

ST25 Fingerprint Biometrics: Strategies for Implementation
Proprietary templates and a general lack of standards have long been an obstacle to the widespread adoption of biometrics. Recently, however, a number of vendors have pledged to support a common ANSI specification for fingerprint templates. Does this open the door to plug-and-play biometric security? This session will introduce you to standards-based technology, provide you with a review of recent interoperability tests, and show you how to take advantage of new standards in both physical and logical security implementations.

Workshop Advisor:Bill Rogers, Editor, Biometric Digest
Attendees Will Learn:
  • About ANSI-INCITS 378, the new standard that allows end-users to utilize a variety of fingerprint scanning and reading technologies interchangeably
  • About consumer acceptance of fingerprint security technology in a number of applications
  • About the plans of fingerprint technology suppliers to leverage the new interoperability standards
  • About case studies from a number of organizations that have implemented fingerprint biometric security
