8:15 AM
Keynote Address: 2007 U.S. Economic Outlook: Soft Landing or Slip Sliding Away?

Will the recent weakness in the U.S. economy be contained to the housing and auto sectors or snowball into a broad based economic downturn in 2007? In his presentation, Stuart will address why he believes the economic weakness will be arrested and a "soft landing" will occur in 2007. Economic strengths for preventing a "hard landing" for the U.S. economy include:
*Job and income gains supporting moderate consumer spending growth *Solid business investment spending *Improving non-residential construction *Rising U.S. exports in a growing global economy *The recent decline in energy prices and fixed mortgage rates.

Even in a soft landing economy, credit risk spreads should widen from recent record low levels as business and personal bankruptcies move higher, especially for subprime credits. The FOMC will set the stage for a series of Fed funds rate cuts beginning May 2007, which will help limit any further downslide in the housing market and overall economy.
